You are now going to look at excerpts from a student’s response to the essay question on the issue of self-determination in education for Indigenous Australians.
This student has chosen scope as the organising principle of the essay, identifying four key areas to analyse.
Read the excerpts and take note of how these key areas are mentioned explicitly in the introduction and reinforced in the topic sentences (first sentences) of the paragraphs that are introducing new arguments. This allows the reader to see the organising principle easily and, thereby, follow the development of the arguments.
