Bringing it all together

This section demonstrates how the language strategies you learned in the preceding sections are used together in a piece of writing. It also allows you to practise your recognition of multiple language strategies.

In this unit, you have been introduced to the functions of Theme and Thematic progression, vocabulary choices, conjunction and reference as individual elements which help to create cohesion in writing.

Now let’s look at how they all work together within a single passage of text.

These are the two texts that we read at the beginning of this unit. The first text was easy to read, but in the second text it was difficult to follow the ideas. Read these texts again, along with the comments, to find out why.
